Factsheet: "Transitioning through Menopause with HIV"

An increasing number of women with HIV are now transitioning through menopause, yet awareness and understanding of menopause, particularly its HIV-specific aspects, remain limited among both healthcare providers and women themselves. Menopause can exacerbate the already elevated risks of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and depression in women with HIV, making proactive screening, assessment, and management essential.

Regular evaluation of menstrual cycles and symptoms, use of tools such as the Menopause Rating Scale, and careful consideration of drug interactions between antiretroviral therapy and menopause treatments are recommended. This guidance also acknowledges that transgender and non-binary individuals may experience menopause and should receive appropriate care.
