HIV Medicine is not officially recognised as a distinct specialty in most European countries; instead, it is considered a sub-specialty interest within various fields such as General (Internal) Medicine, Infectious Disease, Genito-Urinary Medicine, and Dermato-Venerology, among others. Consequently, clinicians across Europe interested in incorporating HIV Medicine into their careers undergo diverse and varied training experiences.

Background

The European Diploma in HIV Medicine aims to address the absence of recognised specialisation in HIV medicine within postgraduate training across Europe. Acknowledging the diverse practices across regions, the diploma seeks to establish minimal standards of education and training. It aims to ensure practitioners possess core knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies crucial for effective HIV medicine practice.

Certification

The European Diploma in HIV Medicine is awarded by the European AIDS Clinical Society. While this certification is not currently accredited by an official regulatory body, it is designed to uphold high standards and is recognised for its contribution to professional development in the field of HIV. It does not confer a legal or professional title and is not equivalent to a specialty certification or postgraduate degree.

It supports EACS’s commitment to the following objectives:

  1. Clinical Practice Harmonisation: Harmonising HIV care standards according to EACS Guidelines ensures that candidates embody best practices, resulting in positive patient outcomes and supporting professional mobility.
  2. Professional Competence Certification: Establishing minimum knowledge standards through certification validates successful candidates’ clinical proficiency, ensuring they meet benchmarks for effective HIV management.
  3. Continuous Professional Development: Encouraging ongoing competency enhancement in knowledge, attitudes, and collaboration offers candidates a structured learning and development opportunity that fosters a culture of professional innovation.
