Now available: WAVE article on European Guidelines for HIV and breastfeeding

The research article entitled ‘European Guidelines on HIV and breastfeeding: “Same, same, but different” - Results from a WAVE survey’ is now published in HIV Medicine.

The WAVE (Women Against Viruses in Europe) study aimed to consolidate European guidelines on HIV and breastfeeding to better inform medical staff and people living with HIV in the decision-making process for breastfeeding. Nineteen national guidelines from 20 European countries were translated into English, reviewed and summarised into key topics. While most countries recommend formula feeding, many also offer guidance for breastfeeding under specific conditions. Despite relying on the same evidence, the guidelines vary, e.g. in breastfeeding duration, and often lack clarity around mixed feeding.

This review consolidates European guidelines, encourages shared learning and lays the foundation for future research and guideline development for parents living with HIV and their infants.

Join the September EACS Live! Journal Club on Quality of Life for People Living with HIV

Join us on:

Wednesday, 17 September

15:00-16:00 CEST

This session will bring together clinical and community perspectives on improving the lives of people with HIV. Drawing on findings from the nationwide CoRIS cohort in Spain, we will present research on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), its associated factors and changes over time, as well as physicians’ views on measuring HRQoL in routine care and potential clinical interventions.

We will also examine non-medical approaches to HIV testing and the role of non-governmental organisations in shaping effective prevention strategies. Innovative, community-led initiatives will be showcased, highlighting how grassroots engagement strengthens public health responses and fosters sustainable, inclusive models of care.

Examination Applications are now open for the European Diploma in HIV Medicine!

EACS is happy to announce the official launch of the European Diploma in HIV Medicine.

The Diploma is designed for healthcare professionals working in HIV care and aims to support efforts to harmonise clinical practice across Europe, while addressing the lack of recognised specialisation in HIV medicine within postgraduate training.

The first European Diploma in HIV Medicine examination will take place online on 25 September 2025 and is designed to assess professional competencies in HIV management through Single-Best Answer (SBA) questions. It offers clinicians an opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate clinical proficiency through certification
  • Benchmark their knowledge against defined European standards
  • Support their continued professional development
  • Strengthen professional mobility within the field of HIV care

We hope it will provide real value to healthcare professionals and support their ongoing learning and expertise in the field of HIV medicine.

Now available: educational video on HIV and Menopause!

EACS WAVE (Women Against Viruses in Europe) has created the educational video and accompanying factsheet “Transitioning through Menopause with HIV” to support women and healthcare professionals.

More women with HIV are reaching menopause, but awareness of symptoms and appropriate care remains limited. This can lead to missed diagnoses and untreated health issues such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and depression.

Read the factsheet and watch the video to learn more.

Join the EACS Live! Journal Club on HIV-1 drug resistance to Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs)

Monday, 21 May 2025

14:00-15:00 CEST

The next EACS Live! Journal Club will take place on Wednesday, 21 May at 14:00 CEST and will focus on HIV-1 drug resistance to Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs).

Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs) are now considered a cornerstone of combination antiretroviral therapy. Resistance to INSTIs in HIV treatment is relatively uncommon, particularly with the use of second-generation agents, but can occur. In this Journal Club we will discuss the resistance patterns during second-generation INSTI failure and the risk factors for developing resistance. Special focus will be given to dolutegravir resistance due to its widespread use as a first-line antiretroviral agent globally.
